Information and Policies Guideline

 

SDA Mission Statement:

Stage Door Academy endeavours to provide quality dance training in a warm and friendly environment.  Through passion and spirit we deliver technique based training towards the pursuit of excellence. We are committed to nurturing and developing our students minds, bodies and hearts through creativity and discipline; preparing them for the experience of life.

Student etiquette:

  • SDA provides a friendly, safe and non-discriminatory place for all students, parents and teachers. Adherence to the following expectations is mandatory of all students, parents and teachers. Any behaviour / actions deemed inappropriate by the Director, may jeopardise your child’s enrolment at SDA.
  • Respect and integrity to be shown to all ‘SDA family’ members
  • No bullying, discrimination, or intimidation
  • Positive interactions are expected, no gossiping or ‘put downs’

 

  • The abovementioned expectations apply to any event/competition where SDA is being represented; and extends to opposing teams/competitors and their studio.
  • Students are not permitted to socially chat to each other during class. If disrespect is shown to a staff member, the student may be asked to leave the class.
  • Honesty and Integrity at all times is expected and appreciated.
  • Have appropriate clothing and footwear on when arriving and leaving the studio.
  • Uniform and grooming requirements to be adhered to – (specific guidelines for each class are found in Grooming & Uniform Policy)
  • Arrive on time for class – late students miss work they have paid for and disrupt other students in the class. SDA recommends that students arrive at the studio at least 10 minutes before the start of class to allow time to prepare for class, stretch/warm up.
  • Students selected for Ballet / other Examinations, may be required to attend more syllabus classes prior to Examination day, to meet necessary standards of these examinations. Exam costs are extra.
  • Students are not to leave the studio/premises without a parent/guardian and should be adequately supervised at all times.
  • SDA students should be dropped off/picked up on time. SDA holds no responsibility for a child before/after their class/es.
  • SDA recommends leaving valuable items at home and holds no responsibility for any items damaged, lost or stolen on the premises.
  • The final decision regarding entrance to: examinations, performance teams, and classes are made by the Director.
  • SDA holiday programs and/or workshops are highly recommended.
  • No student is allowed to enter an Eisteddfod/competition without prior permission from the Academy.
  • Private lessons are contingent on student’s attendance to their committed weekly classes.
  • When dressed in dance/stage costumes, no eating or drinking, except water.
  • All Choreography for Eisteddfod’s, performances and concerts remains the exclusive property of SDA, even after a student has left the studio. Permission by SDA is required for any public use of footage, choreography or routines. SDA routines/choreography are not to be put on Youtube or other Social Media sites as this may infringe copyright.
  • Students are not permitted to attend class at any other dance school unless authorised by the Director of SDA.
  • Respect and care for studio costumes, equipment, facilities etc. Please clean up after yourself.
  • SDA may use photos and/or video footage of students for advertising purposes or for sharing on the SDA Facebook page. If you do not wish your child to be included in this, then please let us know.
  • Students are to interact respectfully, safely and quietly between class times. Students may use the Community Centre space to play, practice dances/technique, stretch etc, however, no use of tap shoes or other noisy shoes are permitted. The Centre’s main flooring is not appropriate for these shoes; they are only to be used on adequate studio flooring in one of SDA’s allocated halls. No responsibility is taken for students who are being unsafe in their actions or inappropriately using the Centre’s facilities.

Parent/Guardian etiquette:

NOTE: We strongly recommend parents/guardians read and discuss the Student Etiquette guidelines with their child/ren. This ensures that all parties understand what is expected of them.

  • Parents/Guardians to please respect and follow the advice and direction provided by teachers and be supportive of their children’s and others efforts.  It is more important to focus on children’s efforts rather than winning or losing.
  • Appreciate that children participate in dance for their own enjoyment and are all unique and talented in their own way.
  • SDA may use photos and/or video footage of students for advertising purposes or for sharing on the SDA Facebook page. If you do not wish your child to be included in this, then please let us know.
  • Students are placed in classes etc according to many factors, which may include: age, ability, class-size, safety of the student. The final decision regarding entrance to examinations, performance teams, and classes is made by the Director. Any queries regarding class formation, student selection, choreography, costuming etc is to be addressed with the Director of SDA, outside of class/teaching time.
  • SDA requires up-to-date contact information for parents/guardians. This ensures we can communicate any announcements, information, timetable changes etc to you in a timely fashion; which will ensure you are across the latest, relevant information for your child. We also need this information for emergency purposes. Therefore, it is your responsibility to ensure these details are up-to-date.
  • SDA must be informed of any medical/other conditions your child may have.  Our teachers need to be fully informed in case of an emergency. Knowledge of issues which may affect your child’s learning or performance will enable SDA to cater for your child’s needs as best as we are able to; and all reasonable attempts to do this will be made.
  • Parents/guardians/friends etc are not permitted to view regular classes in progress, unless invited by the teacher or Director. Opportunity to view your child’s progress will be provided throughout the year and any progression (or other) concerns should be advised to the Director immediately. If SDA is not aware of an issue, we cannot address it. *NOTE: for younger students where viewing is permitted, there is to be no “in and out” of the room whilst class is in progress.
  • The SDA dance studios, bathrooms, carpark and other facilities are to be treated with respect and care. Please do not leave rubbish or mess in any of these areas. Students or siblings waiting/playing in the main area of the Community Centre must be quiet so that classes/other people are not disturbed.

Staff etiquette:

SDA teaching staff are well-trained, responsible and hard-working members of the SDA Family. They aim to provide students with the skills, technique and confidence required to be the best they can be!

  • Respect and integrity to be shown to all ‘SDA family’ members
  • No bullying, discrimination, favouritism or intimidation
  • Positive interactions are expected, no gossiping or ‘put downs’

 

  • Teachers need to view safety as paramount for SDA students and themselves at all times. Teachers need to keep any expected Blue Card / First Aid etc requirements up to date as part of their employment.
  • Teachers are to:
  • utilise correct teaching principles, technique and model acceptable behaviours
  • Set standards and expectations and maintain discipline
  • Have integrity, be flexible and willing to listen to directives/suggestions from SDA staff/Director
  • Advise all discrepancies, issues or complaints directly to the Director. No matters are to be dealt with, nor important decisions made without Director’s approval.
  • Dress appropriately for their classes with correct footwear for each particular class.

 

Fee information:

  • Fees attract GST and are set by the Director. Fees are subject to change: However, all reasonable attempts to convey any changes to SDA families will be made; therefore you must ensure contact information is kept up-to-date.
  • SDA Term fees are payable as per the terms listed on each Term’s invoice. Any other fees outside of this (costumes etc) will be advised, and are payable as per the terms of their relevant invoice. Any amendments, refunds or alternative payment arrangements are not guaranteed and are at the discretion of the Director. Debt collection agencies may be used at the Director’s discretion, to recover unpaid fees.
  • Each year upon re-enrolment, an accident and insurance fee will be charged per student as required per the Terms and Conditions of SDA’s insurance and liability insurance policy. This fee will include a free SDA product at Director’s discretion.
  • SDA students leaving the studio must provide one month’s notice to the Director, otherwise term fees may not be refunded.
  • If a student cannot attend a private lesson, two weeks’ notice is required, otherwise full fees are payable / no make-up class will be offered. Make-up lessons are offered when the appropriate notice has been given.
  • All fee enquiries are to be made directly to the Director only. Please call or email the Director outside of class times, or talk to the Director outside of class times. Fee enquiries during class time are not acceptable.

 

Uniform and Grooming Policy:

  • No jewellery to be worn to class, with the exception of stud earrings or sleepers. This rule applies to all classes from Tiny Stars through to Seniors.
  • Students are required to wear SDA branded shirts/jackets for all public outings, Eisteddfods and Concerts.
  • Below are the guidelines for each class/dance style:

 

 

Tiny Stars classes:

  • Pink or Black leotard and pink ballet stockings are mandatory.
  • Optional pink/black skirt for Ballet and Black shorts for Jazz.
  • SDA branded t-shirt / SDA branded attire
  • Ballet, tan jazz or tan tap shoes – as per class requirement
  • Hair to be tied back neatly, out of eyes. Optional flower / bow/ ribbon in hot pink / black / turquoise colours.

 

 

Ballet: Pre-primary ballet through to Senior:

  • Black leotard, pink ballet stockings and ballet shoes are mandatory.
  • Optional black wrap skirt
  • SDA branded t-shirt / SDA branded attire
  • Hair to be in a neat bun, hair out of eyes and face. Optional flower / bow/ ribbon in hot pink / black / turquoise colours.
  • Separate examination leotards will be required for examination students
  • Black wrap-around top for cooler months – optional
  • Leg warmers for cooler months – optional

 

Jazz:

  • Black leotard and tan stockings are mandatory
  • Jazz shoes, tan or black for classes. For concerts / performances specific jazz shoe colour required and will be advised.
  • SDA branded t-shirt / SDA branded attire
  • Hair to be tied back neatly out of eyes and face. Optional flower / bow/ ribbon in hot pink / black / turquoise colours.
  • Black shorts / existing black & blue energetiks shorts – optional
  • Black wrap-around top for cooler months – optional

 

Tap:

  • Black leotard and tan stockings are mandatory
  • Tap shoes, tan or black for classes. For concerts / performances specific tap shoe colour required and will be advised.
  • SDA branded t-shirt / SDA branded attire
  • Hair to be tied back neatly out of eyes and face. Optional flower / bow/ ribbon in hot pink / black / turquoise colours.
  • Black shorts / existing black & blue energetiks shorts – optional
  • Black wrap-around top for cooler months – optional

 

 

Lyrical:

  • Black leotard, convertible stockings are mandatory. Foot undies required in most dances also, but will be advised.
  • Hair to be in a neat bun, hair out of eyes and face. Optional flower / bow/ ribbon in hot pink / black / turquoise colours.
  • SDA branded t-shirt / SDA branded attire
  • Black wrap-around top for cooler months – optional
  • Leg warmers for cooler months – optional

 

Musical Theatre:

  • Black leotard and convertible stockings are mandatory
  • Jazz shoes, tan or black for classes. For concerts / performances specific jazz shoe colour required and will be advised.
  • SDA branded t-shirt / SDA branded attire
  • Black shorts / existing black & blue energetiks shorts
  • Hair to be tied back neatly out of eyes and face. Optional flower / bow/ ribbon in hot pink / black / turquoise colours.
  • Black wrap-around top for cooler months – optional

 

Contemporary and Acro:

  • Black leotard, convertible stockings and black shorts / existing black & blue energetiks shorts – mandatory.
  • Hair to be tied back neatly out of eyes and face. Optional flower / bow/ ribbon in hot pink / black / turquoise colours.
  • SDA branded t-shirt / SDA branded attire
  • Black wrap-around top for cooler months – optional
  • Leg warmers for cooler months – optional

 

Hip-Hop:

  • SDA branded t-shirt / SDA branded attire
  • Loose baggy black pants or black leggings
  • Runners/Joggers or Hi-tops allowed
  • Hair to be tied back neatly out of eyes and face
